ABA Re-Opens Alternative Business Structures Debate

After deciding four years ago not to lift the ban on non-lawyer ownership of law firms, the American Bar Association has re-opened the debate.

Comments from state bar associations and other legal groups, posted to the ABA’s website late Friday, suggest the question is still a contentious one, with advocates for increased “access to justice” on one side, and those warning money-hungry non-lawyers will soil the profession on the other.

The comments, still being updated by the ABA as of late Friday, were submitted in response to a 16-page “issues paper” released last month by the ABA’s Commission on the Future of Legal Services.
