Aetna Calls Humana ‘Formidable,’ Backing U.S.’s Antitrust Case

Humana Inc. represents Aetna Inc.’s “most formidable competitor” in the Medicare insurance market, according to an internal Aetna document presented in court to support U.S. claims that the merger of the two health insurers would reduce choice for seniors.

The document, written by Nancy Cocozza, the head of Aetna’s Medicare business, was offered by the Justice Department as part of the government’s lawsuit seeking to block the $37 billion takeover.

Humana “was #1 in growth and is our most formidable competitor,” Cocozza wrote. “We compete with them everywhere and they have momentum.”
