Before Tax, Law Firms Change Health Plans

Changes mandated by the Affordable Care Act have hit Big Law.

In early November, an internal memo from Debevoise & Plimpton surfaced on the legal blog Above the Law, outlining how employees will see increases in their medical costs, including co-pay and out-of-pocket maximums.

The changes occur as Debevoise prepares for an upcoming tax on employers that offer high-end healthcare plans, and affect 2016 medical benefits.

Starting in 2018, a 40 percent tax that will be imposed on benefits over a certain dollar level. The thresholds are $10,200 for individual coverage and $27,500 for families, pushing big law firms to take a harder look at how their employee ...
