MassMutual GC Slams Bingham on Diversity, Doubts Industry Can Change

Mark Roellig , executive vice president and general counsel of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company thinks the diversity problem is a result of the law firm business model.

“You don’t need diversity to sell hours,” Roellig said. “In fact, diversity may even hurt you in selling hours.”

In a recent interview with Big Law Business, he suggested “corporate America” understands the importance of diversity, but expressed doubt about law firms. MassMutual stopped doing business with now-defunct Bingham McCutchen as a result of what he characterized as its lack of diversity.
