Suit May Prove Test Case for Question of Non-Lawyer Referral Fees

Can a law firm ever pay a referral fee to a non-lawyer? Clark Hill, with approximately 300 attorneys, could be a test case as it faces a civil lawsuit claiming it paid “kickbacks” to a consulting firm in return for a referral.

Last month, government contractor FCi Federal Inc. sued Jonathan Goldman, its ex-chief growth officer, along with Colvin Run Solutions, a consulting firm, and Clark Hill . Among other claims, FCi alleged that Goldman had an undisclosed interest in Colvin at the same time he hired Colvin to do work for FCi.
