To Heal Justice Gap, ABA Prescribes ‘Legal Checkups’

Seeing a doctor for a regular physical check up can do wonders for a person’s health. The American Bar Association recently asked lawyers to imagine if a corollary could exist in the law.

In a 116-page report released over the weekend, the ABA’s Commission on the Future of Legal Services recommended 12 ways to close the so-called “justice gap,” or the relative lack of legal representation available to poorer Americans.

One of the recommendations is increased use of “legal checkups,” systematic questionnaires designed to identify actual or potential legal problems.
